The Southern Africa Association for the Advancement of Science (S2A3) Masters Medal (Bronze Medal) serves to commend outstanding South African research students graduating at the Masters level in a scientific discipline. These medals are awarded annually to one candidate selected by each South African university.

The 2016 Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Medal winner is Mr Alexander Blair Stuart MacFarlane. Mr MacFarlane is recognised for his outstanding achievement in his Master’s studies in Mechatronics Engineering. His dissertation title was “Modular Electric Automatic Guide Vehicle Suspension-Drive Unit” and he was supervised by Prof Udo Becker and Prof Theo van Niekerk.
